Description from the seller
Freek van denBerg (1918–2000) was a Dutch painter, often described as the last Dutch Fauvist. His work is characterized by a bold use of color, expressive brushwork, and a preference for landscapes, figures, and cityscapes. Although largely self-taught, he received lessons in his early years from artists including Frits Giltay. He was strongly inspired by French Fauvists such as Kees van Dongen, Matisse, and Derain.
Besides his work as a painter, Van denBerg was also active as an art critic for publications such as Het Parool and Vrij Nederland. In 1985, he moved to the village of Veessen on the IJssel River, where his work became lighter and calmer in tone, influenced by the river landscape. Freek van denBerg developed a recognizable style that balances between Fauvism, Impressionism, and Expressionism, leaving behind a colorful oeuvre that remains a favorite among collectors.
