Original edition of this important account on the French conquest of the territory of French Sudan (present-day Mali) by Gallieni, senior commander of the Upper Senegal River (1886-1888).
Work containing 163 wood engravings after Riou's drawings and 2 fold-out maps.
In October 1886, Mahmadou Lamine resumed his actions in the Boundou. Gallieni, with two columns, headed towards Diana, the capital of Mahmadou Lamine; he escaped but was killed at the Battle of Toubacouta on the Gambia border in December 1887.
To counter Samory, who had resumed his reprisals, a post was built at Siguiri and a new treaty was signed at Bissandougou in March 1887.
Elegant 19th-century binding in half red morocco with corner tips, spine with raised bands decorated with gold tools. Gilt head. - Binding in good condition, spine slightly darkened, minor tear at the tail cap. Foxing inside, small repair with adhesive on the margin of a map. Untrimmed. Good condition.
