Description from the seller
Paul Kleinschmidt (1883-1949).
"Don Quixote". Original etching on heavyweight paperboard, 1919.
Hand-signed with monogram, dated, and inscribed in pencil by the artist: "Fehlplatte abgeschliffen ...".
Proof print documented in pencil by the artist on the print (1-6, no. 3). Unique impression, like all these early proofs by the German artist.
Reverse with small stamp of the Siegbert Marzynski collection ("SM").
Sheet size: 34 x 25 cm.
In very good condition, despite its age. With stains corresponding to the artist's own printing process.
Antique wooden frame with glass, 35 x 27.5 cm. With minimal marks or imperfections.
The final portfolio, containing eight etchings from the Don Quixote series, was published in 1919 by I. B. Neumann in Berlin.
A gem.
Kleinschmidt exhibited his first works in the Berlin Secession group exhibitions. His complex work is now considered part of the Weimar Expressionist movement. Some of his works were confiscated and exhibited at the Munich exhibition of "Degenerate Art" in 1937.
