Description from the seller
Tribute to Bacchus
School: Spanish (20th century)
Author: Enrique Navarro (1924–1997)
Valencian painter associated with social realism and expressive figuration, known for his genre scenes, popular portraits, and compositions with notable narrative strength. His work stands out for a critical and ironic perspective on contemporary society, as well as for the use of a sober palette and solid drawing.
Style: Social Realism / Narrative Figuration
Technique: Oil on panel
The composition depicts a crowded urban scene, where a large group of characters moves in different directions, creating a sense of bustle and chaos characteristic of 20th-century social realism. In the center, the figure of an older man emerges, with a somewhat flamboyant bearing, who seems to become the narrative axis of the work, while around him unfolds a diverse crowd: women in summer dresses, tourists with hats, male figures from various social backgrounds, and even characters evoking a cosmopolitan and contemporary atmosphere.
At the top, the sign 'Eurobuilding' is visible, setting the scene in a modern context, possibly an urban Spanish environment from the last third of the 20th century. The artist employs a sober, earthy palette combined with color accents — such as the yellow hat or the green dress — to emphasize focal points within the composition. The brushwork is firm, descriptive, and oriented toward the psychological character of each figure, reinforcing the scene as an ironic and humanist social commentary that aligns with Enrique Navarro's critical spirit.
The piece is presented with a white lacquered wooden frame, straight-lined and with a contemporary aesthetic, which adds sobriety and does not interfere with the narrative strength of the scene.
The frame comes as a gift. It may be damaged during transport even if it is properly packaged.
