Christ at the column
Isolated figure of the stories of Saint Bruno (Certosa di Garegnano)
The work exhibits stylistic and compositional characteristics attributable to the figurative culture of Daniele Crespi and the production of his Milanese workshop.
Description of the work
The painting depicts Christ crucified in full figure, isolated against a dark and dramatically cloudy background. The figure is shown with outstretched arms, a slender body, and the head tilted to the right in an attitude of composed suffering. The face, bearded and framed by long hair, expresses an internalized pain, devoid of pathetic emphasis.
Anatomy is rendered with naturalistic attention: the torso is dry, the muscle masses well defined but not displayed, the limbs considerably elongated according to an expressive module typical of post-Caravaggesque Lombard painting. The loincloth, clear and flowing, is treated with fluid and luminous brushwork, creating a strong contrast with the dark background and the warm flesh tone, modeled by a raking and selective light.
The wooden cross, simple and without inscriptions, barely emerges from the background. The landscape below is reduced to a few rocky masses, just hinted at, serving the devotional focus of the image. The overall scene conveys an image of intense spirituality, meditative and austere.
