Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
Navíos en el Mar, a 19th‑century Spanish oil on canvas depicting a maritime landscape with a brigantine in the foreground, unsigned and in acceptable condition, measures 40 × 54 cm.
Description from the seller
A work of great pictorial interest from the late 18th or early 19th century, during the height of European maritime painting and the peak of sailing navigation. It depicts a navigation scene with several ships, dominated in the foreground by a brigantine flying the Spanish flag, sailing on a turbulent sea under a sky with changing atmosphere.
Oil painting on canvas, the artist demonstrates a remarkable mastery of maritime perspective, light, and atmosphere: the rigging and sails are described with precision, the waves show very subtle greenish and bluish shades, and the sky is rendered with a delicate chromatic range, typical of the best marine tradition of the period. Although the work is unsigned, the quality of execution suggests a painter trained in the European marine painting school of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Measurements: 40 × 54 cm, unframed. The painting is in good overall condition for its age, although on the right side of the canvas there is a small crack/defect, clearly visible in the photographs, which does not affect the visual strength of the piece but should be mentioned for transparency. It is a very attractive piece for collectors of historical maritime painting and works related to navigation and Spanish naval history.
