Artist Profile
Sakata Jinnai (1943-) was born in Tokyo and began his ceramic journey in 1964 under the tutelage of Kamoda Shoji, one of Japan's most influential modern potters. In 1966, Sakata established his own climbing kiln in Mashiko Town, where he has continued to create innovative works that bridge traditional and contemporary aesthetics.
Throughout his career, Sakata has expanded beyond ceramics to work with glass, paper, LED lighting, and mixed media installations. His exhibitions include regular solo shows at prestigious venues such as Nihonbashi Takashimaya (since 1987), a 1994 opening exhibition at New York's Takashimaya Art Gallery, and a 35th anniversary exhibition at Waseda University's Aizu Yaichi Memorial Museum in 2001.
Sakata's works have been dedicated to major Japanese shrines, including the Grand Shrines of Ise and Izumo, reflecting the spiritual and cultural significance of his artistic vision.
