This magnificent Fuji-themed woodblock print was created by renowned contemporary Japanese woodblock artist Kunio Kaneko (金子邦夫) in July 1989. It is one of his representative works rooted in the "Neo Japan Art" concept.
Produced manually using the traditional woodblock printing technique (Mokuhanga), the golden background employs the artist’s signature metallic pigments (gold leaf/gold powder), showcasing delicate texture and luxuriousness. The composition centers on a large-scale red Mount Fuji, paired with a golden backdrop and white cloud motifs—vibrant hues lend strong decorative appeal. The rough texture of the mountain contrasts with the fine gold foil background: this balance preserves the flat aesthetic of traditional ukiyo-e while integrating modern art’s minimalism. Through bold colors and concise composition, it conveys the solemnity and serenity of Mount Fuji (Japan’s sacred mountain), embodying the charm of Japanese wabi-sabi (侘寂) aesthetics.
The artist’s signature, seal, and the limited-edition number "116/200" appear at the bottom of the work.
Kaneko has continuously created the Fuji series since the 1980s, defined by "traditional techniques + modern aesthetics." He often uses gold/silver leaf/pigments to amplify visual impact, focusing on classic Japanese themes (e.g., Mount Fuji, koi fish). His works rank among the most representative pieces of contemporary Japanese woodblock prints, boasting both artistic and collectible value.
This print comes with a frame and glass panel, with a sticker bearing the artist’s biography attached to the back of the backing board. The frame shows signs of wear such as dents and scuffs. Due to age, the print paper has developed signs of oxidation and yellowing, but the overall condition remains good.
