Swan self‑filling fountain pen by Mabie, Todd & Co Ltd, model Swan, made in solid 9K gold with a flexible gold nib, lever-filler mechanism, 129 mm long and 10 mm in diameter, dating from the first half of the 20th century, in good used condition with minor signs of wear, supplied in the original Mabie, Todd & Co Ltd period case.
Description from the seller
This Swan Self-Filling Pen, manufactured by Mabie, Todd & Co. Ltd., is presented in very good condition, notably because it is made of solid 9-carat gold, with the hallmark '9CT' clearly visible and original.
The body and the cap, entirely in gold, maintain their solid structure and are well preserved. The longitudinal engine-turned engraving is well defined and continuous, with even and natural wear consistent with its age, without material loss or deformations. Micro-scratches and light surface marks are observed, typical of use and the passage of time on a solid gold piece, with no deep dents or structural dents.
The lever filler system is complete and retains its original elements. The mechanism operates correctly; as is common with vintage pens, the condition of the internal sac should be considered based on the intended use of the piece.
The flexible gold nib is intact, with no cracks or repairs, good alignment, and elasticity. It exhibits a smooth and progressive response, allowing for line variation under pressure, a feature highly valued in vintage Swan nibs. It maintains its original shape and functionality, with a patina appropriate to its age.
Overall, it is an authentic and very attractive piece, both for its construction in 9K solid gold and its flexible nib, making it especially interesting for demanding collectors and lovers of expressive writing.
The pen is presented with its original vintage case, belonging to Mabie, Todd & Co. Ltd., with interior inscription:
