Description from the seller

The 6 volumes of the 1848 edition. Large octavo. Half-leather binding. Ornate and gilded spine with raised bands, marbled endpapers. The overall condition is very good. The bindings are solid, and the interior is well preserved except for a few pages showing signs of old moisture.
Very numerous color engravings under snakes.

Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon, better known simply as Buffon (1707-1788), is a French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist, philosopher, and writer.

Both an academician of sciences and a French academician, he participates in the spirit of the Enlightenment. His theories have influenced two generations of naturalists, notably Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck and Charles Darwin.
From the apothecary's garden, he transformed the Royal Garden of Plants into a place of research, education, and a museum, planting trees sent to him from all over the world. From then on, he dedicated himself entirely to natural history.
Buffon is mainly famous for his major work, Natural History, General and Particular, with the description of the King's Cabinet, published in 36 volumes from 1749 to 1789, plus eight more after his death, thanks to Lacépède. It encompasses all the knowledge of the time in the field of natural sciences. It is in this work that he notes the similarities between humans and monkeys. The attention Buffon pays to internal anatomy places him among the pioneers of comparative anatomy.
Natural history, which was meant to encompass all the kingdoms of nature, includes only minerals and a part of the animals (quadrupeds and birds). It is accompanied by a Theory of the Earth, an introductory Discourse, and supplements.
