Cotton Tibetan thangka of the Vajradhātu Mandala, late 20th century, titled Grand mandala tantrique tibétain du Vajradhātu – Vairocana, measuring 55 by 40 cm in good condition.
Description from the seller
Tibetan tantric mandala painted on cotton canvas, representing the Mandala of Vajradhatu, centered on the cosmic Buddha Vairocana. This type of mandala belongs to the cycle of Yoga Tantra and constitutes a major cosmological and initiatory diagram of Vajrayāna Buddhism. Dimensions: 55 by 40 centimeters.
The composition is structured around a quadrangular palace with four gates, surrounded by concentric rings of secondary deities, directional Buddhas, and wrathful protective deities arranged in liminal zones. The iconography is complete, coherent, and in accordance with canonical models, indicating a serious monastic production intended for ritual and educational use, rather than decorative.
The palette, dominated by mineral pigments (reds, blues, greens, and yellows), as well as the firm but non-academic drawing style, are characteristic of Tibetan productions from the late Qing period.
The reverse side bears an ancient wax seal in the lower part, probably monastic, indicating ritual use or workshop validation.
Dating and origin
Technique and support
Mineral and organic pigments on a cotton canvas
Ritual painting (thangka / mandala)
Condition of preservation
Overall in good condition considering the age and its ritual function. Normal peripheral wear and abrasions, with no heavy repainting or visible restorations. Shows signs of wear and folding on the left side. Good iconographic readability.
