Description from the seller

Arai Masaharu(荒井正春) "Larch Maki-e Flat Natsume"

This flat natsume (small wooden tea container) is the work of contemporary maki-e artist Arai Masaharu.
Its elegant design features a Japanese larch (karamatsu) painted in glittering gold against a smooth black lacquer.

Its flat, sturdy form is a traditional "flat natsume" used in the tea ceremony.
It is a tool used to prepare thin tea, and the gesture of opening the lid evokes the tranquility of the tea room.

This natsume is more than just decorative; it reflects time, the seasons, and the spirituality of Japanese culture.

Arai Masaharu depicts the branches and leaves of the larch trees that spread throughout Japan's mountainous regions.
Their distinctive radial leaves (thin needles spreading out in a ring) are symbolized by the gold.

The circular pattern resembles the "swaying of the sun,"
and even evokes a philosophical quality reminiscent of the Zen circle.

The gold's shimmer changes subtly depending on the angle of the light,
and it sways mysteriously under the tea light—a true expression of the tea ceremony.
Maki-e is a Japanese decorative technique that dates back to the Heian period.

After applying lacquer and allowing it to soften and dry, gold powder or gold leaf is "sprinkled" on top,
a mind-boggling process until the design is finally complete.

In Europe, it was highly regarded as Lacquer Japonais (Japanese lacquer art) during the Renaissance,
and was prized as an ornament for royalty and aristocracy.
Today, European collectors are once again seeking out this authentic lacquer art.

Natsume tea caddies are the "flowers" of the tea ceremony.

- Preserves the aroma of the tea leaves
- Reflects the host's aesthetic sense
- Communicates the seasons to guests

The Japanese larch pattern on this piece evokes the tranquility of the transition from autumn to winter.

Symbolizing the spirit of wabi and sabi,
the gold acts as a ray of light in the darkness of the tea room.
