Born in 1936 in Soloba, Mali. Died in Bamako in April 2016. Malick Sidibé's work is primarily known for his reportage photographs, taken at parties organized by young people passionate about music and freedom, as the country was preparing for independence.
In 1962, he opened the 'Studio Malick' in Bamako. The studio portraiture became the main focus of his work. People come from everywhere to have their portrait taken by the eye of Bamako… Recognized at the first Bamako Photography Encounters, his work was exhibited at the Fondation Cartier in Paris and then in major galleries and museums around the world. He received the Hasselblad Prize in 2003 and the Golden Lion in 2007.
