Japanese painter of the Meiji and Showa periods. Born in Osaka. Studied under 姫島竹外 Himejima Chikugai (1840-1928). Since the first year of the Taisho era (1912), he has repeatedly been selected for the Bunten Exhibition. His work "Early Spring" won a special prize in 1916. Founded the Japan Southern Painting Academy with 河野秋邨 Kono Shuson (1890-1987). He later served as a judge for the Teiten.
with signature 'Chikuho Sanjin' 竹圃散人 and seal 'Takei In' 田敬印 'Chikuho' 竹圃
This elegant hanging scroll by Mizuta Chikuho (1883–1958) depicts a vibrant arrangement of peonies and sparrows, a classic theme in Japanese bird-and-flower painting. Chikuho was known for his refined brush technique and delicate color sense, both of which are beautifully expressed in this work. The large peony bloom is rendered with soft, layered pink tones, while the surrounding leaves show subtle variations of green and blue. A sparrow perched on the branch adds a lively and graceful presence to the composition. The accompanying calligraphy balances the image and enhances the scroll’s poetic atmosphere. Chikuho’s signature and seals are clearly visible, confirming the work as an authentic example of his style during the mid-Shōwa period. This piece comes with its original double storage box (tomobako and outer protective box), both bearing inscriptions that provide provenance and indicate careful preservation by its previous owner. The mounting shows minor age-related wear, while the painting surface remains clean and well preserved with bright, fresh colors. Overall, this is a refined and charming example of modern Japanese kachōga, combining technical finesse with a gentle, classical elegance.
