Description from the seller

三井飯山 Mitsui Hanzan (1882-1934)
Born in Iiyama, Kagawa in 1882. Studied Nanga under Toichi Oyo 十市王洋 in Oita and later under Tanomura Chokunyu 田能村直入 in Kyoto. Specialized in landscape, flower, and bird paintings. In 1921, he formed the Japan Nanga Academy with Ikeda Keisen, Kono Shuson, Tajika Chikuson, Mizuta Chikuho, Yamada Kaid,o and others.

Age: 1922 Spring / 癸戌春日
with signature 'Banzan Senshi sha' 飯山僊史写 and seal 'Mitsui Un' 三井蘊 'Banzan' 飯山

A refined hanging scroll by Mitsui Hanzan (1882–1934), depicting an elegant composition of an old pine tree with blooming peonies. Hanzan, known for his lyrical brushwork and gentle, refined coloration, beautifully contrasts the strength of the robust pine trunk with the softness and vitality of the blossoms. The subtle modulation of ink and delicate pigments creates a serene and auspicious atmosphere, long cherished in Japanese art for its symbolism of longevity and prosperity. The scroll bears Hanzan’s signature and seals and is mounted in a traditional Japanese silk format. A wooden storage box is included for safekeeping. A graceful example of early 20th-century Japanese painting, suitable for interior display and for collectors who appreciate floral themes, classical motifs, and the elegance of Nihonga expression.
