Boy halfway through the flight, Jodhpur, India
With his incisive journalistic approach to photography, Steve McCurry has captured some of the most iconic images of the 20th and 21st centuries. McCurry creates simple and representative photographs aimed at illuminating areas of the world and creating narratives from honest portrayals of people and places. The photographer is known for his contributions to magazines like National Geographic, whose cover featured 'Afghan Girl,' his infamous image from 1985. The woman's haunting green eyes and her position in a country behind the Iron Curtain strengthened the significance of the photo. 'I think the best way to photograph someone is to really look into their eyes,' McCurry said. 'Eyes are so expressive, they say so much about a person.' In recent years, McCurry has continued his journalistic investigations into the less fortunate in areas near his home, photographing domestic workers victims of abuse across the United States.
