About the artist :
STEVE MCCURRY
Born in 1950 in Philadelphia (United States)
A member of Magnum Photos since 1986, Steve McCurry was born in 1950 in Philadelphia and lives in New York. He studied at the College of Art and Architecture at Pennsylvania State University before working as a photographer for a newspaper. After two years, he embarked on his first of many trips to India. With little more than a bag of clothes and film, he traveled across the subcontinent and explored the country with his camera.
His career was launched when he crossed the Pakistani border, disguised as a Pashtun, just before the Soviet invasion. The photographs he took were published worldwide and earned him the Robert Capa Gold Medal, the first of a long series of prestigious awards, including four World Press Photo awards in the same year and the Olivier Rebbot Memorial Award twice.
McCurry is one of the most emblematic figures of contemporary photography for over four decades. His work covers conflicts, disappearing cultures, ancient traditions, and contemporary culture, while maintaining the human element that makes his photographs powerful images. He is also known for his images of the South and Southeast Asia. The young Afghan refugee with green eyes (Pakistan, 1984), whom he also found twenty years later, is one of the most famous global icons of photography.
Recently, the Royal Photographic Society of London awarded McCurry the Centenary Medal for his entire career, and in 2019, McCurry was inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame.
