Artist biography

Guillem Villá Bassols was a Catalan painter born in Bogotá in 1917 and died in 2005. Brother of the renowned artist Miquel Villà i Bassols, Guillem moved to El Masnou (Barcelona) as a child, where he lived for most of his life. He initially trained in Colombia and continued his career in Catalonia.

Villá Bassols mainly cultivated landscape and marine themes, with a style close to constructivism, characterized by monumental compositions, dense impasto, and great attention to the treatment of light and contrasts. Solo and group exhibitions in Barcelona, Madrid, Girona, and other parts of Spain, as well as participation in national competitions such as the Hispano-American Biennial and the National Fine Arts Exhibition.

His work shows influences from Fauvist styles and Cézanne, just like that of his brother Miquel, with whom he shared the intensity of color and a taste for compositional solidity.
