A bamboo Ikebana flower basket with a tall handle by Sasaki Kogakusai (佐々木光岳斎) from Japan, dating to the Showa period, approximately H 37 cm × W 17 cm × D 16.5 cm, in good condition with light signs of age.

This is a finely woven bamboo flower basket with an elegant tall handle, created during the Showa period by the recognised bamboo artist Sasaki Kogakusai. The craftsmanship displays a beautifully controlled curving silhouette and a precise open-weave pattern, showing careful attention to rhythm, balance and symmetry. The rim, handle bindings and base are all finished with detailed techniques that demonstrate the maker’s refined skill.
Sasaki Kogakusai is recorded as an established bamboo craftsman in the “Japanese Bamboo Art Database”, published by the Ritsumeikan University Global COE Program for Digital Humanities of Japanese Culture. His work is valued for its traditional craftsmanship and graceful sculptural quality.
The basket has gentle wear, patina, light discolouration and signs of handling consistent with age. It remains in good to very good used condition. Please refer to the photos for details.
