Adrien Étienne Gaudez, born in Lyon on February 9, 1845, and died in Neuilly-sur-Seine on January 23, 1902, was a French sculptor.
Adrien Étienne Gaudez was a student of François Jouffroy at the École des beaux-arts de Paris in 1862.
A prisoner of war in Magdeburg during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, he is notably credited with the monument in memory of the French prisoners from that city.
Orpheus: The Myth
Orpheus is the son of King OEagre and the muse Calliope. He knew how to charm wild animals with the accents of his lyre and was able to move inanimate beings. He was bestowed with numerous gifts by Apollo.
On the very day of her wedding to Orpheus, the dryad Eurydice, fleeing from Aristée who is bothering her, is bitten by a snake hidden in the tall grass. She dies from the bite and descends to the realm of the Underworld. Orpheus, inconsolable, follows her there, and after enchanting Cerberus, the monstrous three-headed dog guarding the entrance, and the terrible Eumenides with his enchanting music, he is able to approach the god Hades and his wife Persephone. Through his music, he manages to persuade him, and Hades agrees to let him leave with his beloved, on the condition that she follow him in silence and that he neither look back nor speak to her until they have both returned.
