Description from the seller
Item Description:
This is a traditional Japanese woodblock print by renowned artist Masao Ido (井堂雅夫), titled "Nanzen-ji in Snow" (南禅寺) from his celebrated "One Hundred Views of Kyoto" (京都百景) series, specifically part of the "Ten Views of Eastern Kyoto" (洛東十景) subseries.
The scene depicts the tranquil snow-covered grounds of Nanzen-ji Temple, as viewed from the grand wooden pillars of its entrance.
The composition beautifully contrasts the strong architectural elements in the foreground with the serene natural landscape beyond, capturing the quiet elegance of Kyoto in winter.
Ido's mastery of light, shadow, and seasonal ambiance is evident in this highly collectible piece.
Masao Ido is highly regarded for his modern shin-hanga woodblock prints, and this work exemplifies his signature style — blending tradition with a contemporary sensibility.
This piece is a must-have for collectors of Japanese prints or admirers of Kyoto’s historic charm.
Artist's Comment:
Entering the temple grounds through the north gate, the Sanmon gate and the grand Daikōdō hall emerge from among the trees.
Their majestic presence is utterly overwhelming.
While Nanzen-ji is splendid in spring and autumn, I wanted to depict it in winter.
Captivated by the powerful, massive wooden pillars supporting the Sanmon Gate, I began sketching.
I placed the Sanmon's pillars near the foreground, capturing the deep shadows of the winter sun while using the distant scenery as a borrowed landscape to depict the gate of the sub-temple.
Snow began to fall once more over the vast grounds of Nanzen-ji.
Size:
Approximately 36 cm × 26 cm
