Description from the seller

MARTÍNEZ DE LA VEGA, Joaquín (Almería, 1846 – Málaga, 1905).
Spectacular work created in oil on panel by the brilliant painter of the 19th century, Joaquín Martínez De La Vega.

First, he studied in Córdoba before moving to the Special School of Painting, Sculpture, and Engraving in Madrid. He was awarded a scholarship by the Diputación and studied under Federico de Madrazo in Rome. Denis Belgrano introduced him into Málaga society. He participated in the National Fine Arts Exhibition in 1871, where he was awarded a Third Class Medal. In 1872, he was appointed a counselor and, a year later, a teaching associate at the Academy of Drawing and Vice President of the Fine Arts Section. He served on the jury for various important local competitions and was a member of the Old Art Commission during the Paris Universal Exhibition, as well as a member of the Munich Universal Exhibition to encourage artist participation. He taught Drawing and Painting at the Liceo, where future prominent painters such as Reyna Manescau and Xavier Cappa studied.

At the Bellas Artes, Industria, and Architecture Expo inaugurated by Alfonso XII, several paintings are presented. He begins to paint Orientalist themes. He held the interim assistantship that became vacant after Bracho Murillo's death. The following year, he directs the Drawing Academy of the Liceo. He also taught Color and Composition as an interim assistant professor. He is named a Merit Member of the Liceo and in charge of the Drawing and Figure chair. He receives a Gold Medal in Fine Arts for his work 'Stella Matutina,' which is included in the album offered to His Holiness Leo XIII. From 1888, he dedicates himself to religious painting. He was appointed an academician in 1891. In 1892, he became a full professor at the School of Fine Arts and obtained the Chair of Color and Composition. He belonged to a family of Malagan origin, and the artwork was carefully shipped by an international company. The dimensions of the piece alone, without the frame, are 31x23 cm. It is sold with a frame from a later period than the original.
