Japanese Kutani 'Renzan' large vase – Meiji/Taishō period, height 57 cm
A large and richly decorated Japanese Kutani porcelain floor vase, signed “Kutani Renzan” (九谷蓮山) on the base, dating to the late Meiji / early Taishō period (late 19th – early 20th century).
The tall baluster body with a long flaring neck is densely painted in the aka-e / kinran style, with an all-over ground of finely detailed chrysanthemum and floral patterns in iron-red and abundant gilding.
On the front and back are two large fan-shaped main panels: one depicting a Japanese landscape with temples, mountains, and cherry trees in blossom, the other filled with luxuriant chrysanthemums and various seasonal flowers.
These fans are set against an extremely dense background of gilt and iron-red floral and geometric motifs, enhancing the refined Kutani decoration and the strong decorative impact of the vase.
Height: approx. 57 cm
Maximum diameter: approximately 30 cm.
Period: late Meiji – early Taishō, circa 1890–1920.
Material: porcelain with crackled glaze and polychrome overglaze enamels and gilt (aka-e / kinran-de)
Mark: square gilt and iron-red mark 'Kutani Renzan' on the base (九谷蓮山).
Condition: generally very good for age, with light wear to the gilding and rim consistent with use; no visible major chips, cracks or restorations (please study the photos carefully to judge the condition).
Provenance: inherited from a private diplomatic family collection; reportedly purchased in Tokyo in the early 1990s with a price tag of 39,000 yen at the time (approximately 280–320 euros in 1990).
A highly decorative and sizeable signed Kutani vase, ideal as a statement piece in a classic or eclectic interior.
