Luis Menéndez Pidal was a notable Spanish painter and decorator. He was a professor at the Madrid School of Industrial Arts and the School of Arts and Crafts, a professor of antique drawing and drapery at the Madrid School of Fine Arts, and a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. After completing his law studies, he entered the Madrid School of Painting, where he became a student of Alejandro Ferrant. In 1886, thanks to a scholarship, he moved to Rome to further his training. There he studied under Francisco Pradilla and José Villegas. He traveled to Naples, Venice, and Florence, where he attended the Accademia Nazionale Ussi. He collaborated on the decoration of the Church of San Francisco el Grande in Madrid, painting the dome of one of the chapels. He participated in numerous exhibitions, both individual and collective, obtaining a second medal at the National Fine Arts Exhibition of 1890, two first medals in 1892 and 1899, for the canvases entitled The Empty Cradle and Salus Infirmorum, decoration in 1895 and medal of honor in 1924. In addition, he was awarded a gold medal at the International Exhibition of Munich in 1900.
