Mabie Todd & Co. Ltd. Swan Eternal No. 54 fountain pen, with ebonite marmolado body in red and black, 14K solid gold nib engraved SWAN 14CT MABIE TODD & Co. LTD ETERNAL, lever-filler mechanism, gold-plated highlights, 14 mm diameter and 117 mm length, manufactured in London in the late 1920s and in excellent working condition.
Description from the seller
This extraordinary Swan Eternal No. 54 by Mabie Todd & Co. Ltd., manufactured in London towards the late 1920s, is preserved in an exceptional condition, both aesthetically and functionally. Its body made of hard marbleized ebonite in fiery red and deep black tones retains the full intensity of the original color, with a dynamic veining and sharp contrast that demonstrate careful preservation and freedom from prolonged exposure to light.
The original engravings remain perfectly visible, sharp, and without signs of wear, while the code 54 / ETN, engraved on the case back, retains its fine and authentic stroke. The gold finish of the fittings (clip, rings, and loading lever) preserves its natural and uniform shine, showing only a minimal patina consistent with the piece's age, with no loss of plating or corrosion.
The 14-carat solid gold nib, engraved with the inscription SWAN 14CT MABIE TODD & Co. LTD ETERNAL, is presented in its original condition and excellent structural state. Its medium semiflexible point offers smooth writing, with a fluid stroke and elastic response that provides expressiveness and control, a distinctive feature of pre-war British nibs.
The lever filler system (side lever) has been tested and is fully operational, with a firm lever, internal sealing, and correct bag functioning. No cracks, fissures, or wear are observed in the ebonite.
Overall, this Swan Eternal 54 exhibits an 'Excellent (E+)' condition, highlighting its well-preserved original color, impeccable functioning, and vibrant aesthetics. It is an authentic, functional piece of notable historical interest, ideal for both the discerning collector and the enthusiast of classic writing.
It will be sent in a courtesy box for proper preservation.
