- With frame: height x width: 74 cm x 55 cm

Frederik Kasènda was an Indian painter. Kasènda was born on May 31, 1891, on the island of Celebes (Minahasa) and was of indigenous descent, unlike most painters active in the Dutch East Indies. He stood out as a child for his talent, and the then-resident Johan Ernst Jasper, later governor of Jogjakarta, enabled him to move to Java to study there.
Studying was limited, as Kasènda was much more interested in drawing. He took lessons in Surabaya for a few months. He first established his studio in Ngawi, later in Kediri and Madioen, and in the last years of his life, in Singapore. The painter is best known for landscape paintings of Java and Bali. He also created several cityscapes of Singapore. He produced few portraits, only at the beginning of his painting career.
Kasènda supported China in its fight against Japan. He organized an exhibition whose proceeds were entirely dedicated to the Chinese Relief Fund. Shortly before the Dutch East Indies was fully subdued by Japan, he died on January 1, 1942, in Batavia.
