Description from the seller
Japanese Lacquered Woven Carry Container with Three Inner Compartments – Japan, late Edo / Meiji period (attributed)
This lot features a traditional Japanese carry container, attributed to Japan and dating to the late Edo to early Meiji period (circa 1890–1930).
The object is constructed from a lightweight woven organic material, likely bamboo or straw, which has been coated with a dark lacquer finish. The surface shows characteristic hand-woven texture beneath the lacquer, consistent with Japanese utilitarian craft traditions.
The container consists of an outer vessel with a fitted lid and three removable inner bowls, all matching in material and finish. A fixed carrying handle is integrated into the structure, indicating use as a portable storage or serving container. This type of modular, lightweight construction is well documented in Japanese domestic and travel-related objects from the period.
The restrained design, emphasis on function, and use of natural materials reflect the Japanese mingei aesthetic rather than decorative export ware.
