Matilde Bonaparte was one of the most well-known members of the Bonaparte family, by marriage princess of San Donato. A great patron of the arts and letters, she hosted one of the most popular literary salons in imperial Paris. She was herself a versatile artist, practicing drawing, watercolor, pastel, and painting.
Paintings are not just images; they are stories. This painting is an excellent example of a treasure chest of stories. Princess Mathilde Bonaparte (1820-1904), granddaughter of Napoleon Bonaparte, was a cousin of Emperor Napoleon III.
Mathilde Bonaparte was a prominent figure in the cultural scene of her time, someone not to be overlooked: after her unfortunate marriage ended in an official separation, Mathilde capitalized on her independence, intelligence, and culture by opening her Parisian salon to journalists, intellectuals, writers (Anatole France, Marcel Proust, Gustave Flaubert…) and artists from various disciplines (Gustave Doré, Paul Baudry, William Adolphe Bouguereau…), earning her the nickname 'Notre-Dame des Arts,' Our Lady of the Arts.
