Description from the seller
vintage gelatin silver print, titled Mont de Vénus (1978), is a rare and early work by the celebrated Spanish artist Joan Fontcuberta (b. 1955), known for his conceptual and narrative approach to photography. Executed on baryta paper, the composition showcases Fontcuberta's characteristic blending of visual illusion, irony, and philosophical inquiry. The image presents a minimalist yet psychologically charged garden scene, where the circular motif etched into the cobblestone foreground evokes both ritual and mystery—frequent themes in the artist’s oeuvre.
Fontcuberta has been a central figure in contemporary photography since the 1980s, known for works that question the nature of photographic truth and authorship. His practice resonates with the conceptual lineage of artists such as Bernd and Hilla Becher, John Baldessari, Sophie Calle, Cindy Sherman, Barbara Kruger, Jeff Wall, Thomas Demand, Duane Michals, and Sherrie Levine. Fontcuberta’s visual strategies also align with the critical photographic dialogues of artists like Gilbert & George, Allan Sekula, and Victor Burgin.
His work is held in major international collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Centre Pompidou (Paris), and the Art Institute of Chicago. Fontcuberta was awarded the prestigious Hasselblad Award in 2013, affirming his lasting impact on conceptual photography.
This vintage print is signed in pencil in the lower right white margin and bears the photographer’s blind stamp. It is presented matted, with the mat recto additionally signed. The verso carries the photographer’s stamp.
Condition:
Very good condition. The print is clean and well preserved, with no visible damage or discolouration. The baryta paper surface retains a rich tonal range and excellent contrast. Matt included and professionally handled.
