An Edo period Japanese wooden Buddhist altar stele with two seated Buddhas on lotus pedestals flanking a central Nichiren‑type stele, gilded with wear, measuring 34 cm wide, 42.5 cm high and 15 cm deep, over 200 years old, original, unsigned, and sold with its integral stand.
Description from the seller
Japanese Buddhist altar stele composed of two seated Buddha figures on lotus bases, flanking a central pagoda-shaped stele. Each figure is backed by a mandorla halo carved with scrolling cloud motifs. The central stele is of Nichiren-type form; no inscription remains and the surface is entirely worn smooth with no legible characters.
The figures are seated on their original carved wooden lotus pedestals mounted to a stepped base. Gilding is present throughout with expected wear and loss on raised areas consistent with age and devotional use. The two figures show slight looseness and uneven alignment on their lotus bases, consistent with age.
The carved spherical element beneath the left Buddha shows surface wear and partial loss of carved definition, visible in close-up photographs. No other structural wood damage is observed.
The stand is integral to the sculpture and forms part of the original carved structure.
Offered in as-found antique condition.
