Large glazed terracotta amphora from central Italy, dating to the late 19th / early 20th century, with a side tubular spout, short neck, two opposing handles, and geometric horizontal banding in brown and reddish tones on a honey background, dimensions 32 cm wide by 48 cm high by 28 cm deep, generally in good condition with signs of age and use.
Description from the seller
Large terracotta amphora with glazed surface and geometric decoration.
Central Italy, late 19th / early 20th century.
Imposing terracotta jar, handcrafted, characterized by a harmonious oval shape and a strong tactile presence. The object features a tubular side spout, a short neck with an upper opening, and two opposing handles, typical elements of large storage and transport containers used in rural Italy between the late 1800s and the early decades of the 1900s.
The surface is decorated with horizontal band geometric motifs and incised and painted linear marks in brown and reddish tones, applied on a warm honey-colored background. The decoration, sober yet highly expressive, reflects an artisanal tradition linked to the functionality of the object, where aesthetics directly arise from the potter's gesture and everyday use.
The glazing, irregular and lived-in, returns a vibrant surface rich in nuances and color variations due to cooking and use. The interior appears dark and marked, consistent with prolonged use over time, likely related to the storage of liquids such as wine, oil, or water.
From a typological perspective, the amphora fits into the traditional production of central Italy, with affinities to popular ceramics from Umbria, Lazio, or Tuscany, where these large vessels were essential elements of domestic and agricultural life. Today, the object assumes a strong decorative and collectible value, capable of evoking authentic rural atmospheres and an archaic aesthetic of great charm.
Good overall condition, with evident signs of age and use, consistent with the age and original purpose. Presence of wear, abrasions, and a widespread patina, which contribute to the authentic character of the piece. No obvious invasive modern restorations are detected.
Rare example of a large traditional terracotta container, appreciated both in Italian folk art collecting and in contemporary decor with a wabi-sabi, rustic, or Mediterranean taste. An object with a strong visual impact, ideal as a standalone display piece.
Shipping
Highly professional packaging, with specific protections for ancient terracotta. Traceable shipping throughout Europe.
