【Product details】
This finely crafted snake sculpture from the Meiji Period or later is a remarkable example of Japanese artistry and ingenuity. Designed with an articulated body, it can be freely posed and moved, mimicking the lifelike movements of a real snake. Made of cast copper with a beautifully aged patina, the sculpture showcases intricate details, including realistic scales and a textured head.
In Japanese culture, snakes often symbolize wisdom, protection, and rebirth, adding deeper meaning to this unique decorative piece. Originally created as a display item or toy, it reflects the playful creativity of the time while preserving the skillful craftsmanship of the Meiji era.
This piece features a core made of iron, which is covered with copper along the body. While the copper exterior is indeed movable, the iron core inside is very rigid, limiting the range of motion.
Additionally, there appear to be two sections where the internal core is broken (approximately 5 cm from the neck and in the middle of the body). These areas can be easily moved side to side but have limited ability to maintain their position.
Although classified as a jizai okimono (articulated object), please take note of the above details and bid with this understanding in mind.
Due to the characteristics mentioned above, the size is an estimate, but the total length is assumed to be slightly over 60 cm.
The piece shows light wear and patina from age, which enhances its antique charm. One of the fangs is missing. Please refer to the photos for details of its condition.
Dimensions: approx. 60 cm
