This Swan Self-Filler model 230 CSF / S.F.230, manufactured by Mabie Todd & Co. Ltd. in England, is in excellent condition for its time and fully functional. Its iconic Red Ripple celluloid finish retains a vibrant visual presence, with a very attractive red and black marbled pattern typical of high-collectible pieces.
Condition of the body and cap.
The body and the cap show very slight wear, only superficial and consistent with the age of the piece. The celluloid maintains good color depth, uniform shine, and, most importantly, no cracks, fissures, or deformations.
The original inscriptions—including 'SWAN SELF-FILLER – MABIE TODD & CO. LTD – MADE IN ENGLAND,' as well as 'S.F.230' and '230 C.S.F.'—are clear and perfectly legible.
The golden rings of the cap retain good luster and are firm. The clip is straight, functional, and shows only minor wear of the gold plating in areas of friction, typical of vintage pieces.
Charging system
The Self-Filler lever mechanism operates correctly: the lever moves smoothly, has good tension, and returns properly. The pen loads ink without difficulty and is fully functional.
Nib and feeder
The Swan nº 2 14-karat nib is in excellent condition: aligned, with a well-defined tip, no deformations, and fully legible engravings. It offers smooth performance and responds very well during writing.
The ebonite feeder, marked SWAN, is intact and retains its original shape.
General operation
The pen is fully functional, closes properly, assembles without looseness, and offers a smooth and reliable writing experience. It is a collectible piece that is fully usable.
