Description from the seller
This is an oil painting by Piet van den Bergh (1865-1950). Although the subject is a church service – a scene often depicted as sober or dark – Van den Bergh deliberately chooses a strikingly light and serene atmosphere. Grand’ messe des morts is a solemn mass for the deceased, a high liturgical mass within the Catholic tradition held in memory of the dead.
Pieter Annanius 'Piet' van den Bergh lived and worked in The Hague. He studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in the same city and continued his studies with Th.E.A. de Bock and W. Maris. Van den Bergh primarily created landscapes and animal studies, with his style clearly aligning with the tradition of the Hague School. Additionally, he was active in the art scene: he was a member of the Hague Art Circle and of 'De Onafhankelijken' in Amsterdam.
Dimensions: 93 x 67 cm
Dimensions with frame: 117 x 89 cm
