AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

This still life of orange flowers in a blue vase was created by Abraham van der Zee. He was a student at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague, where he studied under Frits Jansen and received the Royal Subsidy for three years. Van der Zee was inspired by the Hague School during this period.

Eventually, he decided to move to Zoutelande on the island of Walcheren. With this move, his use of color also changed: his work became fresher and lighter in tone, and he left the dark colors from his Hague period behind.

Unfortunately, the war brought an end to this Zeeland adventure. Van der Zee was no longer allowed by the German occupier to paint at his beloved spot, and he then moved on to Rheden in Gelderland. There, too, he found inspiration in the surroundings and mainly focused on painting forest landscapes.
