Two gouaches by H. van Gessel (Gerard Delfgaauw), from the 19th century, gouache on paper, Netherlands, with frame, dimensions 42 x 50 cm (2 x 26 x 34 cm unframed), hand-signed, in good condition, titled “Twee gouaches.”
Description from the seller
Two gouaches by H. van Gessel (pseudonym of Gerard Delfgaauw).
One depiction shows a beach with boats and a village in the distance. The other depicts cows in a meadow among the trees with water in the foreground, rendered in a loose but sure touch.
Gerard Delfgaauw attended an art program at The Hague Drawing Academy around the turn of the century and worked in a naturalistic-impressionistic style. He primarily painted landscapes and cityscapes, including scenes of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Dordrecht, and Delft. Among his most well-known works are a series of dynamic harbor views of Rotterdam, including depictions of the De Nieuw Amsterdam and the Statendam moored at the Wilhelminakade.
Part of Delfgaauw's work was signed by an art dealer with H. van Gessel for a brief period. This signature appears only limitedly and directly refers to the oeuvre of Gerard Delfgaauw.
Dimensions: 26 x 34 cm (2x)
Dimensions with frame: 42 x 50 cm (2x)
Viewing is, of course, possible. Additionally, we have our own in-house framing workshop, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary. Furthermore, we collaborate with restorers from the professional organization: 'Restauratoren Nederland'. If you wish to make use of this service, we would of course be happy to hear from you.
