Each pen carved from a single bar of sterling silver. The pens are engine turned by hand to create a rippled guilloche pattern, based on the fine guilloche of 16th century clocks. Nine layers of translucent lacquer are applied by hand; the sterling parts not enameled are plated with ruthenium (a rare component of platinum ore, of which only 12 tonnes are mined annually).
