San Paolo Apostolo, a 17th‑century oil on canvas work from Italy, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Antonio Cifrondi
(Clusone, 1656 – Brescia, 1730)
San Pietro in Meditation
17th-century oil painting on canvas of large size in a contemporaneous oval frame.
Measurements: 107 x 87 cm in frame.
Fabric: 98 x 71 cm
Reasons for the attribution
Morphological typology
The face presents:
Thick beard treated for dark, dense masses.
Robust nose, defined cheekbones.
Eyes looking upward with a pinpoint light on the eyelids.
Recurring characteristics are found among the saints and apostles of Cifrondi and his circle, especially in his early and fully mature works.
These aspects reinforce the definition of 'the scope of Antonio Cifrondi,' that is, a workshop work or a direct follower, probably active between Bergamo and Brescia.
St. Peter in Meditation
Attribution: Lombard painter, associated with Antonio Cifrondi (1656–1730)
Dating: circa 1670–1685
Technique: Oil on canvas
Format: Oval
Description of the work
The painting depicts an apostle, identifiable as Saint Peter, caught in a moment of intense spiritual meditation. The figure is shown in three-quarters view, with a bearded face turned upward and a gaze illuminated by a warm light emerging from the dark background. The hand gesture, clenched and brought to the chest, emphasizes the introspective nature of the scene. The reddish-brown robe, treated with broad and concise brushwork, contributes to the subject's human and contemplative character.
Stylistic analysis and attribution
The work presents stylistic features consistent with Lombard painting of the second half of the 17th century, particularly with the circle of Antonio Cifrondi. The intense yet non-theatrical physiognomy, the use of warm, enveloping light, and the synthetic treatment of the drapery are recurring elements in the production of the Bergamasque master and his circle. Some simplifications in the modeling and anatomical construction suggest attribution to a follower or a direct collaborator, active between Bergamo and Brescia in the last decades of the 17th century.
