Artist biography
José María Jardines (Cádiz, 1862 - 1932) was a Spanish painter specializing in landscapes and genre scenes. He trained at the School of Fine Arts of Cádiz and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. He spent part of his career in Paris, where he exhibited several times, and also participated in exhibitions in Cádiz and Madrid.
In 1914, he returned to his hometown and was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts of Cádiz. Jardines appears in various national catalogs, and his work is documented in institutions such as the Frick Art Reference Library in New York. His son and disciple was the painter Antonio Jardines, born in Paris in 1898.
José María Jardines' work is characterized by its focus on luminous landscapes and scenes of everyday Andalusian life, framed within the popular landscape painting and genre painting of his time.
