The work is attributed to Carlo Francesco Nuvolone (1609-1662) with an expert art historian's study.
Measurements: 42.3 x 31.5 cm
Period: 1630/1650
The work depicts the Madonna with the Child in glory, flanked by Saint Charles Borromeo in the act of intercession, with the Souls of Purgatory in the lower part. The bipartite composition and luminous rendering are fully consistent with the Lombard painting tradition of the Seicento.
The painterly quality, the type of faces, the coloring, and the composition of the scene point to Carlo Francesco Nuvolone. The soft flesh tones, the blurred brushwork, and the treatment of light are consistent with certain works by the master, suggesting a high probability attribution to the painter.
Attributive conclusion
Based on the observed stylistic, iconographic, and technical characteristics, the work can be confidently attributed to Carlo Francesco Nuvolone (1609-1662), or his workshop, within a chronological range between 1635 and 1655.
