A large Satsuma octagonal gosu kōro in the form of a lantern on three feet, 24 × 21 × 21 cm, decorated with cranes and floral motifs in gilt enamel, origin Japan, Edo period (mid-19th century), bearing the Shimazu mon on the base, in very good condition with minor wear, accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity.
Description from the seller
A large Satsuma octagonal gosu kōro, modeled in the form of a lantern and resting on three feet, decorated in the round with eight side panels featuring refined floral and naturalistic motifs, including flying cranes, magpies among irises, and perched pheasants, rendered with great chromatic richness.
The upper section is decorated with an elaborate relief-enamel design in shades of green, black, blue, and orange, enhanced with extensive gold application.
The pierced cover is shaped in the form of a chrysanthemum.
The underside bears the Shimazu mon.
Satsuma ware is one of the finest expressions of Japanese ceramics. Originating from the ancient province of Satsuma (now Kagoshima), it was produced as early as the Edo period (1603–1868) using low-temperature firing, which gives it the characteristic surface with craquelure and vibrant decorations.
The koro is in very good condition, with minor wear consistent with age. Please refer to the pictures for further details.
