Paysage d'Automne, an original oil painting by Schols (XX), Belgian, dating from 1970–1980 and sold with a frame.
Description from the seller
Subject and Style: Figurative landscape, impressionist or post-impressionist style, with a thick application of paint (impasto), typical of many Belgian landscape painters of the 20th century (Laethem-Saint-Martin School, luminism or their successors).
• Signature: The signature is partially visible at the bottom right and seems to end with "CHOLS" (according to one of the photos). A search indicates a Belgian painter named E. Schols active in the 1970s, known for Brabantine landscapes, with similar works on the market. This is a solid lead, but the signature could also be another name ending in -chols, -cols, or -sols.
• Approximate dimensions:
• The vertical photo of the tape measure shows about 53 cm (55 cm minus the edge of the tape).
• The photo of the tape measure laid flat shows about 85 cm.
• These correspond to the dimensions of the outer frame. The dimensions of the canvas itself would be somewhat smaller, probably around 50 cm x 80 cm.
• Condition: The artwork appears to be in generally good condition, but the gilded frame shows signs of wear (cracks, small chips), which is typical. The verso (back) seems to be a professional mounting from the period.
