Seen, born Richard Mirando, was born in 1961 in the Bronx where he grew up. Nicknamed the Godfather of Graffiti, Seen now lives between Paris and New York.
Graffiti movement was in full emergence at that time. Richard was captivated by the painted subway cars running along Line 6 or parked in the Lexington Avenue yard. His uncle's garage backed onto this yard. He entered the depot one Saturday afternoon in 1973 and created his first 'piece.' He chose the pseudonym 'Seen.' He went as far as painting whole cars that left a mark on New Yorkers' minds. His father regularly beat him to punish him.
In 1982, the documentary film Style Wars by Tony Silver and Henry Chalfant made it an icon of the movement worldwide.
In 1981, he took part alongside Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Basquiat at the exhibition 'New York, New Wave' at PS1 in New York.
He continues to exhibit alone or with artists such as Banksy and Obey. He is among the artists featured in the exhibition 'Urban Conquest' at the Museum of Fine Arts in Calais in 2019.
Having set the world record for the most expensive graffiti canvas, Superman Who, in 2009 at $96,000, on February 15, 2012, surpassed the previous record held by JonOne in 2007, before being overtaken by Kaws in 2015.
