Klaus Prior (*1945 in Wesel, Germany) is a Swiss sculptor, painter, and draftsman.
Born in the year of Germany's defeat and Europe's liberation from Nazi terror. Growing up in the rubble wasteland of a small town in the Rhineland, Klaus Prior was raised in a society that, forgetful of its history, refused to confront its past.
Klaus Prior was among the later generations who could not accept the guilt defense and the repression of the past by the perpetrator generation.
When the newly established economic miracle called him up for military service or issued the draft notice, he fled the country. Unlike many conscientious objectors who went to West Berlin, he moved to Switzerland.
Switzerland was then, for many artists, the better country, the land where one was not surrounded by former Nazis and anti-Semites. It was much freer there to breathe, and one could create in peace.
In 1967, he began studying painting at the School of Applied Arts in St. Gallen. Three years later, he moved as a freelance artist to Tessin. Klaus Prior engages with wood sculpture, iron casting, and painting. He has lived and worked in Tessin ever since.
Klaus Prior's theme is the human form. In the 1980s, he increasingly turned to sculpture alongside painting. Most of his sculptures, made primarily of wood and worked with a chainsaw, are similar to the works that emerged in the 1980s by Baselitz and A.R. Penck, as well as the wooden sculptures by Balkenhol or Hans Scheib.
Since 2008, he has focused heavily on painting, bronze and iron sculptures, as well as works for public spaces.
Numerous exhibitions and participation in exhibitions in various European countries.
