Oil painting titled Canal du Midi by Horace Champagne (attributed), depicting a serene river landscape, framed, 38 cm high by 43 cm wide, France, original edition, signed by hand, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Traces of a signature and the back label suggest an attribution to Horace Champagne, known for his atmospheric depictions of landscapes and river scenes, in which the treatment of light and the interest in chromatic nuances typical of Impressionism stand out.
The painting presents a serene river view, probably a stretch of the Canal du Midi, where a small quay and a boat beached in the foreground introduce the scene. The watercourse reflects a row of tall trees lining the route, creating a visual balance between the verticality of the trunks and the horizontality of the river.
The light, filtered by a partly cloudy sky, lends an autumnal atmosphere, with ochre tones, deep greens, and blue-gray hues that evoke calm and contemplation. The brushstroke is loose and vibrant, characteristic of Impressionism, and seeks to capture the momentary impression of the landscape rather than its detailed description.
Details about the frame
The frame is antique, crafted and shaped wood, with an aged gold finish. It features a broad, stepped profile, giving solidity and prominence to the work. It may show signs typical of the passage of time.
