A horse and a zebra run along the shoreline, in a landscape suspended between sea and classical architecture. The five-color lithograph, executed with calibrated tones and bold lines, merges nature and archaeological memory into an image that is both dynamic and timeless, characteristic of De Chirico's metaphysical poetry.
Being the first version of the subject, the work holds a special historical and collectible value: it is the initial formulation of an iconic theme that De Chirico would later develop in other variants, and for this reason, it is considered the most authentic and rare among the different interpretations.
Giorgio de Chirico's graphic activity represents a fundamental chapter of his work. The lithographs from the seventies, like this one, offer collectors direct access to the artist's metaphysical language, with images of strong suggestion and excellent execution quality.
The work bears a pencil signature, title, and edition number, with a blind stamp of Giorgio de Chirico and Alberto Caprini, printer in Rome. Authentic on the back by Bora Edizioni. Published in Giorgio De Chirico Catalogue Raisonné of graphic works 1969-1977, Bora Editions 1999, p.216 pl.191. Beautiful wooden frame.
Giorgio de Chirico (Volos, Greece, 1888 – Rome, 1978), master of Metaphysical painting, is one of the leading figures of 20th-century art. After his years in Berlin and Paris, where he was close to Picasso and the avant-garde, he developed a personal language characterized by silent squares, statues, horses, and mythologically inspired marine landscapes. His graphics are sought after on the international market and highly appreciated by collectors.
