Description from the seller
Splendid watercolor depicting a Rabbi, probably datable to the 60s–65, in the transition of the master of Israeli expressionism from landscape painting to portraiture. David Gilboa (1910-1976) was born in Romania in 1910. He studied at the Bucharest National University of Arts, Romania, between 1927 and 1929. He emigrated to Israel in 1933 and settled in Safed. He is one of the founders of Safed's Artist Quarter. David Gilboa was a landscape painter until he discovered the human element, which he had previously regarded as of secondary importance. Subsequently he focused on painting people. In addition to painting landscapes and people of Israel, he also produced and illustrated several books. David Gilboa died in Tel Aviv in 1976.
The painting will be sold in its contemporaneous glass frame, frame dimensions approximately 70 x 40 x 4 cm. Signed by the artist in the lower left corner, as shown in the image.
