Description of the work
Signing is a piece from The Signature series, in which Lídia Vives explores the relationship between identity, vulnerability, and self-defense. Through the self-portrait, the artist reflects on the armor we adopt throughout life—not always physical, but just as heavy.
The work has been modified with a digital drawing created by the artist herself, in which a plant-inspired Baroque armor is superimposed over her body. This symbolic element coexists with cobalt blue floral tattoos and a small red heart under the eye, elements that dialogue between the ornamental and the emotional. The handwritten text in the upper corner reinforces the intimate meaning of the image: "Do you remember when you put on the armor for the first time? I don't."
As is often the case in her work, Lídia combines visual language with personal narratives, addressing themes such as violence, resistance, social reckoning, and empowerment. Signing speaks not only of protection, but also of the wear and tear of maintaining that armor day after day.
