The sculpture, made of plaster according to ancient Italian craftsmanship, rests on a green marble base.

The subject

It depicts the head of Laocoon.

It is reported in Virgil's Aeneid that, when the Athenians entered the city with the famous Trojan horse, Laocoön threw a spear at it, causing its belly to sound and exclaiming: 'Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes'.
