Oil painting on canvas by Carlo Trevisan titled Maternità (2025), an original surrealist work in a 34×34 cm white wooden frame, hand-signed on the front and authenticated on the back, depicting mother and cub zebra in a vivid red composition and sold directly by the artist.
Description from the seller
This work by Carlo Trevisan, notably titled 'Maternità,' represents an interesting variation of surrealism applied to the natural world.
The element that immediately strikes the observer is the extraordinary color contrast. Trevisan abandons the traditional black and white of the zebra to adopt a vibrant, almost fiery red. This choice is not only aesthetic but symbolic: the warmth of the color transforms the animal into a vital and passionate entity, evoking the pulsating energy of the maternal bond.
The stripes are not merely decorations but become lines of force guiding the eye through a fluid and sinuous composition. The oil technique, visible in the materiality of the canvas, imparts body and softness to the faces of the two subjects.
Trevisan's surrealism here manifests in the formal synthesis through the merging of forms: the hills and the bodies of the mother and the puppy intertwine until they almost fuse into a single chromatic mass. This suggests that, at the moment of care, there is no separation between parent and child.
The eyes of zebras possess an almost human depth. The mother's gaze is protective and vigilant, while that of the young one appears confident.
The ethereal background, lacking geographical references, decontextualizes the subjects, making the theme of 'Motherhood' a universal and timeless concept, suspended in a blueish void that highlights the red flare of the protagonists.
In this work, Trevisan manages to combine the almost graphic precision of the natural pattern with a dreamlike sensitivity. 'Maternità' is not the portrait of an exotic animal, but the celebration of a primordial instinct, expressed through bold and poetic visual language.
Oil painting on canvas with a white wooden frame and mat, with overall dimensions of 34x34x3 cm — Signed on the front and authenticated on the back.
